Great Wolf Tragedy, Gun Range Hearing, Old Hospital
Daily Weather · Wednesday
79°High

We are having a bit of a summer-like warm spell here, but for you Autumn-lovers (me included) it will be short lived. For Wednesday, expect a high near 79°F with a small chance of a shower around midday. Keep the umbrella in the car but don’t cancel anything.

Thursday cools to the mid to upper 60s. Friday warms a bit back to the low 70s, but with an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms. Admittedly, that is a bit of a change from what we told you Tuesday, when Friday looked like a high in the upper 60s with rain. Welcome to the Poconos. Get your generators ready.

After that, Fall makes a return and Winter starts kicking the tires. Saturday tops out near only 49°F, and overnight lows could slide into the low to mid 30s, so dress for the weekend’s outdoor events and bring the plants inside.

PSA: You may get a “tire pressure low” warning this weekend. If so, Weis had free air on 611. If you know of other places to go, throw it in the comments below!

Illustration of Great Wolf Lodge from aboveMonroe Unfiltered

A 27-year-old Towanda woman is charged with two counts of criminal homicide in the deaths of her husband and their 3-year-old son, who were found Monday (Oct. 12) in a guest room at Great Wolf Lodge in Pocono Township, according to the Pocono Record. Metallica Rose Harrison is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

What Officials Say. Monroe County District Attorney Mike Mancuso called it a “violent domestic tragedy” at a news conference Tuesday (Oct. 13) and said there is no threat to public safety. Coroner Thomas Yanac said autopsies will be done later this week. Great Wolf Lodge has called it an isolated family incident and says it is cooperating with police.

What the Complaint Says. The family checked in Sept. 21 and extended their stay through Oct. 13, according to the criminal complaint. Harrison declined to speak with police.

What We Don’t Know. We have not found a court date, and the autopsy results are still to come. We will update you as the case moves.

Barrett Weighs an Indoor Shooting Range Tomorrow

Barrett Township supervisors hold a conditional use hearing Thursday (Oct. 15) at 6:30 p.m. at the Barrett Administrative and Recreation Complex, 1200 Route 390 in Cresco, on Jeffrey H. Siglin’s application for an indoor shooting range at 1071 Route 390. According to the township’s legal notice, the “Barrett Shooting and Sports Center” would be about 20,000 square feet, with two six-lane firing ranges and an indoor archery range, open noon to 8 p.m. seven days a week, on about 7.5 acres. The board can approve the application, approve it with conditions, deny it or continue the hearing.

What Coolbaugh Did Last Month

Before the township’s budget work session Thursday (Oct. 15) at 6:30 p.m., which we told you about Monday, here is what Coolbaugh Township supervisors did at their Sept. 15 meeting, according to minutes the township posted this month. They gave a Wawa at 1545 Prospect Street conditional preliminary and final approval, 4 to 1, with Lynn Kelly opposed. They adopted Ordinance 165-2026, which bans brake retarders (the engine brakes some trucks use on downgrades) on parts of State Routes 423 and 4008, 4 to 0, with Cara Rogan abstaining. And they approved a $150,000 tax anticipation loan for the Pocono Mountain Public Library, also 4 to 0, with Kelly abstaining.

History with a TwistThe Best Equipped Hospital in the East

A Name You May Recognize. In our May 27 edition we told you about motorcycle racer Gene Walker, who was thrown from his bike during practice at the Stroudsburg Fairgrounds in June 1924 and taken to Rosenkrans Hospital in East Stroudsburg. Walker died two weeks after the crash. Now the Monroe County Historical Association has shared the story of that hospital.

Dr. Carl B. Rosenkrans opened Rosenkrans Hospital at 171 Washington Street in East Stroudsburg in 1924, the same year Walker was hurt, according to the association’s Oct. 11 post. It was a three-story, 30-bed facility that drew widespread praise and was advertised as the “Best Equipped Hospital in the East.” It stayed in operation until 1951. If you know Washington Street, it stood across the street from where Taste Café is today.

One Borough, Two Hospitals. For nearly three decades Rosenkrans shared East Stroudsburg with General Hospital, the forerunner of today’s Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono.
