Three Plead Guilty in the Wawa Case, FEMA Keeps the Checks Coming, and Main Street Gets a Scrub

I occasionally get notes to stop badmouthing rain days, so to all those folks, this one is for you. Storms build through the late morning and stick around most of the afternoon and evening, with rain chances peaking around 70 percent at midday and again in the early evening. Expect a high near 77°F, a low around 71°F overnight, and thick, soupy humidity most of the day with a light wind. If you have outdoor plans that do not involve loading animals onto a boat 2-by-2, today is not the day for them.

Wednesday brings real relief: partly cloudy skies, a much lower 24 percent rain chance, and a high climbing to 82°F. The rest of the week holds mostly dry and comfortable, with sunny highs in the upper 70s to low 80s into the weekend.

The Lead Story: Three Wawa Defendants Plead Guilty, Day Before Trial

The Wawa shooting case Monroe County has followed for nearly two years is over, and it ended without a jury. Andrew Quattrochi, 26, of Bushkill, pleaded guilty July 20 to homicide, aggravated assault, and discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure in the November 2024 shooting death of 17-year-old Garrett Gearhart, a Stroudsburg High School senior, inside the Wawa on West Main Street in Stroudsburg. His brother, Christopher Quattrochi, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit riot. Their father, Joseph Quattrochi, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and hindering apprehension.

The pleas came one day before jury selection was set to begin. That timing closes out a legal question this newsletter walked through in detail last month: whether Andrew Quattrochi's defense would get to argue Pennsylvania's “stand your ground” law in front of a jury. Prosecutors have said Gearhart was shot in the back while already on the ground, a detail that cuts hard against any self-defense claim. With a guilty plea, no jury will ever weigh in on it.

Sentencing dates have not yet been announced. We will follow up once they are set.

Main Street Gets a Scrub

Close to 50 volunteers turned out Monday for a Main Street cleanup in downtown Stroudsburg, picking up litter, scraping stickers, touching up chipped paint on light poles, and mulching the flower beds along Main Street. The event, tied to the ongoing America250 celebration, was funded in part by a $5,000 National Pennsylvania Day Mini Grant from America250PA. Organizers say it is meant to be a small thank-you to the business owners and residents who keep downtown running.

The View from the 8thMore FEMA Money Trickles Out

FEMA released roughly $13.5 million more in delayed disaster recovery funding to Pennsylvania last week, the third round released after Senator John Fetterman's office pushed the issue starting with an April letter to DHS. Most of it, about $13 million, goes to UPMC in Allegheny County for COVID-era costs; the rest, $350,000, goes to local governments statewide for disaster-prevention projects. Nothing in this round is earmarked for Monroe County specifically, unlike the $7.8 million that landed at LVH-Pocono in an earlier release, but it is the same pattern playing out again: money approved years ago that is only now moving.

Remember the Pennsylvania Defense and Innovation Summit we told you about last month? Senator Dave McCormick's office says the two-day event in Carlisle produced more than 30 corporate announcements totaling nearly $10 billion in investment and over 4,000 jobs statewide, from submarine manufacturing in Philadelphia to a drone battery plant near Pittsburgh. None of the projects announced touch Monroe County, though they do include an aluminum powder plant expansion in Carbon County.

And in the category of stories that will outlive all of us: Senator Fetterman, working with U.S. Steel and the United Steelworkers, submitted a steel plaque on Pennsylvania's behalf for the Capitol's America 250 time capsule, set to be opened on the country's 500th birthday in 2276. The inscription: “Forged in steel from the birthplace of the United States of America.” Somewhere, 250 years from now, someone is going to read that plaque and have absolutely no idea what a Wawa is (though maybe Wawa will also outlive us all).
